I had the opportunity to try out the Lava Genie through the Vine program.   I like that you can turn it on and start playing right away.   I also like that it comes with a nice case to protect it (it folds up to fit the case).  My husband plays guitar and stressed this is not a regular "guitar" but it's fun and easy to play.  He also stressed, being a left-hander, that it's for right-hand playing. To get better at using this, I recommend going through the simple instructions first and then downloading their app.  The app gives you tutorials that help you learn how to play and more.  I like the tutorials so far (I'm still slowly going through them), but my husband said it helped him a lot (he went through half of it so far). It offers many features to explore.  Some features are presets for different sounds; it has a bass and rhythm section; you can use touchpad or strum with your hand; you can change keys and adjust tempo; it has volume and mute buttons; it supports line out, and much more. I've attached a number of photos to show what is included in the package and on the genie. Overall, I would rate this a 4.5 out of 5.

  1. I can play the guitar a little bit, I would say I’m a novice. I wanted to give this a try since I could sing songs. It’s very easy to setup. The app on my iPhone is straight forward and taught me how to setup the guitar and even play my first song. It’s very well made, the guitar feels strudy, the clicker feels good to strum, the volume knob is quality like the crown of an apple watch. The foldable format is great for storing away.I was able to play an Ed Sheeran song after a couple days of practice.I think this is great for people who care more about quickly singing/playing a song. It’s more like a toy to be honest. It’s like a more difficult version of guitar hero.I feel like it’s good for teens. I definitely don’t get the enjoyment and satisfaction out of using this as I do with learning a song on a real guitar.

  2. This is insanely awesome and far more versatile then I had initially expected. This came as an opportunity to review and this device has enough options and fun to keep you busy for hours. That said, out of the box it is somewhat limited as this really does really on an app that is subscription based. It is well loaded with a variety of sound options and songs. This reminds me of the Guitar Hero years and is played very similarly. That said, this is not a guitar and you need to prior musical skill to play it. You will not learn to play a guitar with this, however, you will learn some similar movements and independence of your hands to make sounds on this so there’s that. The sound quality was more impressive than I expected and this can also be easily connected to speakers. I tested this through my PA system and it sounded amazing. Much better than the onboard speakers, but that is to be expected. You can also connect to devices for recording on your PC. This is very cool and it’s fun to play some of the songs. If you have a group of friends that maybe can’t play a guitar, I can see this being very popular and a fun “jam” session. There is some theory you can learn from using this as well. I have my son learning guitar and he says this actually helps him as he can explore sounds he can’t make himself, but also the beats help him learn timings. He also uses this as a 2nd player and a drummer when he is playing his guitar as he runs the drum machine too. There is the gimmick of this, but it really is fun and I do find there is a place for such a device. This brings people together around music and expands thinking about it into actions. This is more than a toy or guitar hero gimmick, I believe there is real value in this and it promotes creativity and musical understanding. There is a very high level of quality in every component. I am thoroughly impressed and very happy with this. It has helped to expand my son’s guitar learning and gives him another tool to creatively explore music. Absolutely amazing and fun and I can’t recommend this enough. It might be bit pricey, but again, this is not a toy but a tool to help creativity and I am happy I did get this. 1000% satisfied and recommended.

  3. I waited to make this review because as an old school musician- I didn’t have a lot of expectations for this digital/elecytric instrument. I practically have to bribe my son to get playing time and without exaggeratting- it has helped him soar in his musical capabilities. It has so many different sounds and things you can add to make music as a solo artist getting to play each instrument himself. It actually sounds like what it says it will and the other options are amazing. The price seemed high- but after using this steadily for a few months- I can say that it is well worth the price. The feel, the storage capabilities- everything is just perfect.

  4. WOW just wow. I love the aesthetics of it, wish there was a black variant but that’s nitpicking. The sound quality is amazing and I love that it has a 3/4 jack to connect to my soundcard and capture my strumming. I looks and feels premium like an apple product. It’s a great value for the money. I do wish to see future updates to the accompanying app such as being able to import your own samples to use as the instrument’s sound like you see in the Orba and Medo products. I think if they added that feature to the app, this instrument would be unbeatable. it’s also very easy to carry around as it comes with a carrying case and super portable once you disassemble it. lastly, I love how easy it is to just pick up and play.

  5. The Lava Genie guitar came extremely well packaged. The guitar was in its carry case inside its box. That box was completely encased in thick air filled wrap then packed inside another outer shipping box which was then packed inside an NiceShine box. I note this because it was so well packaged and that is not something you see everyday. The instructions that came with the guitar were very disappointing. They just completely ignored the basics and provided very little information. For example there was mention of charging the guitar or even basic setup. It would have been really helpful to have a diagram and label the parts of the guitar. They don’t even tell you where to find the on/off button. The limited instructions refer to parts but it wasn’t always clear. It says 60 seconds to your first chord but I didn’t find that to be true. When you turn on/off the guitar it is quite loud, which always had me turning down the volume (which isn’t labelled but the only knob) and then I couldn’t hear when I tried to play anything. Unlike a real guitar, you just can’t pick it up and strum. You can’t really just pick it up and do anything which was frustrating. You have to download the app to get chords and instructions. There were instruction videos but I found it hard to watch them on the app and see the features they were mentioning. I couldn’t see the screen in the video and of course couldn’t get to that screen in my app because I was watching the video. It wasn’t a typical interactive setup tutorial which would have been more helpful. The guitar seems to have many features but I didn’t find that this was an easy way to learn about them. After a month, I still feel that I don’t understand how to use this product.I had tried to learn guitar as a teen but my fingers weren’t strong enough to play certain chords. I thought this guitar might fix that since there are no strings but I was wrong. I wanted something I could play around with and learn the guitar but that is not what this is. You need to use the app to do anything. I tried playing various songs but most of them don’t sound anything like the real song. To me, it feels more like “Guitar Hero” than a guitar. It also doesn’t even sound like a guitar. So if you want to learn traditional guitar, look elsewhere. I also suspect if you know how to play a guitar, this would frustrate you.Since the songs never sounded right, I have started playing around with it and making my own music. It is fun but not $569 worth of fun. There is a free 3 month trial and after that it cost $5.549 a month or $49.99 a year. It says price may change due to exchange rates but it says those prices are Canadian so that is a little confusing. This isn’t a cheap item and having to pay more to use it is a turn off. In the app, you can watch videos of others playing and I have no interest in that.It is an interesting item but despite watching videos beforehand, it wasn’t quite what I expected. If you are looking to play guitar, look elsewhere. It reminds me more of the electronic keyboards that play multiple instruments but in a guitar format.
